You are so right! I have seen a lot of that also - I left Walmart Corp Office after 20 years last fall to start my freelance writing business (kind of a life long passion!) and I have seen a lot people in the last 6 months starting out but not always doing the research or knowing how to put their plans together, etc. I really look forward to your next updates!

Hi Bobbie,
Thank you for the comment! According to the Small Business Association, two-thirds of new small business survive at least two years, 44 percent survive at least four years, and 31 percent survive at least seven years, according to a recent study. I am not sure what percent is a result of not having one or another skill, but you can only imagine that this might be the issue.

I have noticed a trend since we have been in this down economy. In my area there are almost as many businesses coming in as there are going out. I have a simple theory about this that a friend turned me on to. Many of these new small businesses are being started by people who have been recently let go from their job. These people have a particular skill from accounting to house cleaning. They decide to start a business to sell their skills. The problem is many of these people have been an employee for some time and may not have the business skills to run their own company. We are seeing a lot of "People in Business". Some of this is really made obvious if you look at the business name. I have never seen so many cleaning businesses that just say "Susie's House Cleaning".

Now, please don't get me wrong, I truly applaud all of these people for going out and taking the plunge by starting a business. My hope is that these people seek advice about marketing and running their business so they don't become another statistic. I plan on doing some studies on this and talking about it more in the future. Thanks again!

Great post! Makes perfect sense too. I don't have the statistics but there are a large % of small businesses that fail because the owner was busy 'running the business' and key financial or administrative things were overlooked. With a plan, you are much less likely to miss those and having a plan also helps you identify that you need help before it's too late for help.

Looking forward to the updates!

David: Nice start to what looks like a great blog for small business marketing! One of my business partners and I started a business blog in February of 2007 (www.growingmybusiness.wordpress.com) and have enjoyed watching it grow steadily and organically. Things really took off when we were offered a chance to also write a weekly business column in our the largest regional paper in our area of Southern NYS (www.recordonline.com go to the business section and look for the "Big Dogz on Business" column). Since we started writing the weekly business column, our blog has grown exponentially. We've got a lot more work to do but we're getting there. A few months ago we started adding podcasts in the blog and this month, we'll post our first vodcast.

I read with a smile your story and in some ways, thought of my own journey...USMC for 8 years...met my wife Chris (she was Navy)...then 22 years and 4 kids later...we keep moving along. Glad to see another good story in you life as well! Much more to do, eh?

Best,

Dave
